What is the best way to organize a round-the-world trip?
One of the most enjoyable aspects of a round-the-world travel planner is the inspiration phase.
Perhaps you already have a long list of sites you want to visit on your trip.
Or maybe you’ve nailed down a few important experiences but are looking for more.
You should start with a lengthy bucket list of places to see throughout the world, but weather and route may immediately cross a few off your list.

Here are the steps:

Where can I purchase a round-the-world plane ticket?
Purchasing a round-the-world (RTW) plane ticket through a single airline alliance is the most cost-effective option to circumnavigate the globe.
These are alliances of multiple airlines that make it easy to go to as many areas as possible while paying for it all in one place or using points.
Star Alliance, OneWorld, and Skyteam are the three main airline alliances to choose from.
The Star Alliance is a group of 26 airlines that operate 1300 airports across 98 per cent of the world.
OneWorld consists of 14 airlines that serve 1100 locations in 180 countries.
Skyteam consists of 19 airlines that serve a total of 1000 locations throughout 170 countries.
You can purchase a single RTW airline ticket made up of numerous legs fulfilled by that alliance’s partners once you’ve chosen an airline alliance, whether because of a loyalty program you’re currently a member of or because of its terms, conditions, and destination list appeal to you.
The criteria for round-the-world tickets vary by airline alliance, with exceptions such as Star Alliance’s rule that a round-the-world ticket can include two to 15 stops.
However, regardless of which airline company you choose, some general criteria apply to most RTW tickets.
You must usually travel in one worldwide direction (no backtracking).
So you must begin and end in the same country, and you must book all of your flights before leaving, but you can change them later.
You usually have a year to get from where you started to where you want to be.

Backtracking is not ideal because it is costly, adds to jet lag, and is bad for the environment.
Use this strategy whether you have a round-the-world ticket (which requires this requirement) or if you book flights as you go.
Look for unusual overland routes.
You now have a list of dream destinations and a plan of action. It’s now time to fill in the blanks on your world trip itinerary.
And you’ll do it by taking local transportation, which is a lot more fun than flying—you’ll see more of the country and culture, and your travel experiences will be richer as a result.
Return to a few key destinations from your bucket list.
These are the foundational pillars of your round-the-world itinerary. These map dots should provide a rough overview of a route.
If one is simply an outlier that makes it difficult to see logical jumps, reduce your list to four and see if that helps.
Festivals in your preferred areas can be found by doing a little research.
Local festivals all over the world are brimming with life, culture, and fun.
It’s a huge letdown to discover, too late, that you missed a major religious and celebratory festival by a few days.
Also, it’s a surprise if you arrive thinking it’s shoulder season, only to discover you’ve arrived during Brazil’s carnival.
To match your travel budget, play Tetris with places.
Research each of your dream destinations ahead of time because some places that you may believe are inexpensive cost more than you think (a safari in Africa is not cheap, nor is accommodation in much of Africa, but visiting a dream destination on the continent is worth it).
Japan may be in Asia, but it is also expensive.
Central America and Mexico, as well as parts of South America, are inexpensive.
Weather patterns should be considered when making plans.
When planning your trip, research destinations ahead of time and plan based on your personal weather preferences.
While it’s unlikely that you’ll be able to visit every destination during your preferred season, you should be aware of when monsoon season makes the islands uninhabitable, or when blizzards thwart a planned ski trip.

When planning your itinerary, you must take into account more than just major long-distance flights.
On my travels, I also look into local budget airlines, and I always have a good idea of which parts of the world have cheap puddle-jumper flights.

There is no right or wrong way to plan your trip around the world, and there is no ideal number of places to visit in a year—it all depends on what you want to see and do on your trip.

You won’t know until you figure out what kinds of places and experiences are best suited to your long-term travel style.
However, please keep in mind that the pace of short-term travel differs greatly from that of a multi-month trip.
Create a route that travels slowly, avoids the dreaded travel fatigue, and includes stops at places you’ve always wanted to visit.
