Finding comfortable and affordable places to stay is a cornerstone of budget travel in Europe.

Hostels are a fantastic option, offering dorm rooms at unbeatable prices.

Many hostels boast social spaces, and common kitchens, and even organize events, allowing you to meet fellow travellers and share experiences.

If dorm rooms aren’t your style, consider guesthouses or boutique hotels, particularly in smaller towns outside major tourist hubs.

Local buses and trains are often the most affordable options for getting between cities. Consider purchasing multi-city passes or regional rail tickets if you’re planning on covering longer distances.

For shorter journeys within cities, utilize the metro or tram systems. Many European cities are incredibly walkable, so lace up your comfy shoes and explore at your own pace.

If you’re feeling adventurous, consider overnight ferry journeys between certain destinations.

Not only is it a budget-friendly option, but it also doubles as unique accommodation, saving you a night’s stay on land!

Demystifying Affordability in Europe: Your Budget Travel Planning Guide

While we’ve unveiled some incredible budget travel destinations in Europe, you might be wondering – which countries offer the absolute best bang for your buck?

The answer isn’t a simple one, as affordability can vary depending on several factors, including:

  • Region: Eastern Europe generally offers a lower cost of living compared to Western Europe. Countries like Poland, Hungary, and Bulgaria are renowned for their budget-friendly travel options, with delicious meals, comfortable accommodation, and historical sights all available at a fraction of the price you might expect in other parts of Europe.
  • Seasonality: Shoulder seasons (spring and fall) and even the winter months (especially for those seeking Christmas market experiences!) tend to be less crowded and significantly cheaper than peak summer travel periods. Consider traveling during these times to score the best deals on flights and accommodation in many budget travel destinations in Europe.
  • Travel Style: Your personal travel style also plays a role. Sticking to local transportation, opting for street food and picnicking in parks can significantly reduce your daily expenses. Planning your activities around free museum days and exploring lesser-known sights can further stretch your budget.

Is Eastern or Western Europe Cheaper?

There’s a general perception that Eastern Europe is the undisputed champion of budget travel in Europe.

While it’s true that countries like Poland, Hungary, and the Czech Republic offer undeniable affordability, don’t write off Western Europe entirely!

Several destinations in this region can be surprisingly budget-friendly, especially if you plan strategically.

  • Portugal: This beautiful country on the Iberian Peninsula offers a delightful mix of affordability, culture, and stunning landscapes. Explore the vibrant city of Lisbon, discover charming towns like Sintra, or relax on the Algarve coast – all without breaking the bank. Consider exploring Portugal during the shoulder seasons to avoid peak summer crowds and potentially find even better deals.
  • Greece: While the Greek islands like Santorini and Mykonos can be pricey during peak season, venture beyond the well-trodden tourist path and discover a more affordable side to Greece. Explore the historical treasures of Athens, visit charming mainland towns, or discover hidden island gems during the shoulder seasons for a budget-friendly Greek adventure.

Planning Your Budget for Europe: Essential Tips

So, how much will your budget travel adventure in Europe cost?

While it’s impossible to give a one-size-fits-all answer, here are some tips to help you estimate your budget:

  • Flights: This will likely be your biggest expense. Utilize flight comparison websites and apps to find the best deals, consider budget airlines, and be flexible with your travel dates.
  • Accommodation: Hostels, guesthouses, and vacation rentals offer budget-friendly alternatives to hotels. Consider dorm rooms in hostels for the most affordable option, or look for apartments with cooking facilities if you plan to prepare some meals yourselves.
  • Food: Indulge in delicious and affordable street food, explore local markets for fresh produce, and consider cooking some meals yourselves to save money on dining out. Research restaurants with lunch specials or happy hour deals to further stretch your budget.
  • Transportation: Utilize local buses, trains, and intercity ferries for affordable travel between destinations. Consider travel passes like the Eurail Pass if you’re planning on extensive train travel across multiple countries.

Remember, creating a realistic budget is key to a stress-free and enjoyable budget travel adventure in Europe.

Numerous online resources and travel blogs can help you estimate daily expenses based on your travel style and chosen destinations.

Some Budget travel destinations in Europe

Let me share some budget travel destinations in Europe you will love:

Majorca Spain:

This beach vacation resort, often known as Mallorca, is a popular Spanish vacation destination.

Majorca is known for its white-sand beaches and is the ideal location to enjoy the convergence of sun, sea, and sand.

The greatest time to visit Mallorca is between March and May when typical temperatures are in the 60s and 70s and the island is free of summer vacationers.

Summer in Mallorca lasts for a long time – from June to September – and is marked by scorching temperatures, throngs of tourists, and exorbitant hotel costs.

The fall is another pleasant shoulder season, with temperate temperatures and refreshing rains, but the months of January and February are the greatest for finding good hotel prices.

Istanbul (Turkey)

It is a uniԛue city near the Black Sea, and its streets, and also Mosques (specifically heaven Mosque), Basilica, and imposing wall surfaces that stretch up and down the straight are spectacular.

Here you could go shopping in the world’s biggest Fair (open Market), be careful, you could get lost.

The food is good in Turkey, as well as individuals are cosy as well as friendly, take care if you take a trip beyond Turkey, not every city is as friendly as Istanbul.

I have only been here as soon as, yet would come back a second as well as third time, if life and money permits.

As well as very few cities do I have ever gone back to.

Valetta (Malta)

In the heart of the Mediterranean, it is distinct from all the islands. I have been to numerous islands on the planet, and just another one that can compare with this island is Easter Island.

The island has its caves and archaeological sites, which appear to be in the backyards of houses.

The city is a terrific walled city, as well as plays a historic role in the moments of the Campaigns, as well as WWII: it has more churches on it than Rome I believe. Called the Maltese, which has three connections, I additionally went to Gozo.

However, the city is a gem. My partner would certainly enjoy coming back here.

Lisbon (Portugal)

Lisbon is known for its sunny weather, vibrant nightlife, colourful architecture, traditional Fado music, and welcoming residents. Famous landmarks include the Belem Tower and the Jerónimos Monastery.

In terms of cuisine, Lisbon is known for its seafood and Pastéis de Belém, a custard tart.

Lisbon is one of the most affordable capital cities in Europe to visit, and it offers outstanding value for money when compared to other large worldwide capitals.

Bruges (Belgium)

The best medieval city in Europe, just what extra can I claim, as my wife stated when she says it: it looks like a fairy tale city.

Other than that I’m lost for words, yet take a ride in a boat around its networks (like Venice).

Budapest, engulfed in a rich social legacy and beautiful design, is well-deserving of its place on the top tourist destinations list.

There is so much to do here, from visiting local spoil pubs to browsing area vintage shops, sampling some of the best cuisine products, walking through centuries of architectural history by finding District VIII, and relaxing in a relaxing hot bath.

This is one of my top 50 favourite travel spots on the planet.
